About me

My Name is Rachel and I am the founder and owner of Animal House Zoo.

It has always been a lifelong passion of mine to work with animals. At the age of 19 I visited Australia for 6 months to work on a wildlife park. One of my duties was to present animal talks to the public for a range of species and it was at this point I decided to make this my career.

When I returned from Australia I studied Animal Health and Welfare where I obtained my Foundation Degree. I then went on to study Animal and Wildlife Management where I was awarded my Bachelor of Science Honours Degree.

After volunteering for a number of animal charities and companies I felt it was the right time to establish my own business doing something that I’m passionate about. So here I am, providing animal encounters in a safe and professional manner, educating our future generations on the welfare and conservation of our animals, and housing animals in accordance with the Five Freedoms listed on the Animal Welfare Act 2007.

The health and welfare of our animals is paramount to us, which is why we strictly adhere to the 5 freedoms. These are:

  • FREEDOM FROM HUNGER AND THIRST
All our animals have ready access to fresh water and a species-specific diet in order to maintain health and vigour.

  • FREEDOM FROM DISCOMFORT
All our animals have an appropriate environment that includes shelter and a comfortable resting area.

  • FREEDOM FROM PAIN, INJURY OR DISEASE
All our animals are seen everyday so a rapid diagnosis and treatment can be given if they become ill. They are also housed, fed and cared for correctly in order to prevent any pain, injury or disease.

  • FREEDOM TO EXPRESS NORMAL BEHAVIOUR
All our animals have more than the minimum recommended space, proper facilities, appropriate enrichment and company of animals of its own kind (if they are not a solitary species).

  • FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND DISTRESS
All our animals are kept in conditions that keep them comfortable and stress free. On encounters, if any of our animals are in a situation where they could become stressed they will immediately be returned to their travel carriers to prevent discomfort.
